WinGD and Panasia to deliver emissions upgrades for X-DF dual-fuel LNG engines
Swiss marine power company WinGD has signed a frame agreement with Panasia to upgrade X‑DF dual-fuel LNG engines in service with the latest emissions abatement and fuel efficiency technology from WinGD. The frame agreement, signed during Kormarine 2025, will support ship operators in reducing their cost exposure to maritime carbon pricing, keeping existing vessels competitive for longer.
Where next for LNG fuel after IMO carbon pricing pause?
Going into the extraordinary session of IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee in mid-October, many in the industry had high hopes that the Net Zero Framework (NZF) would be adopted. WinGD was and remains one of the believers; incentivising the production and uptake of clean fuels is the only way to meet both IMO emissions ambitions and wider global climate targets.
WinGD and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions cooperate on engine service
The partnership, agreed during Nor-Shipping in June, will strengthen delivery of WinGD’s new lifecycle services offer, Global Service by WinGD, to Middle Eastern ship operators by enhancing regional capabilities in engine maintenance, repair, overhaul, and retrofitting.
WinGD to introduce first ethanol-fuelled marine two-stroke engine in 2026
Swiss marine power company WinGD will offer the first ethanol-fuelled two-stroke marine engine next year, with deliveries for newbuild and retrofit applications starting in 2027. The announcement follows a decade of investigation into ethanol fuel—including full-scale engine tests in 2018—and the successful launch of a methanol-fuelled engine that uses the same combustion concept and is subject to the same safety regulations as the new ethanol engine.
Retrofits & Upgrades: The pragmatic choice for today’s fleet
As waves of regulation make onboard energy more expensive, shipowners face significant decisions about how to stay competitive and compliant. A well-planned and supported retrofit can add many profitable years of compliant operation to the existing fleet - without the newbuild price tag.
IMO’s Net Zero Framework could bring higher penalties for shipowners even if they use solutions that consume less fuel and emit fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than alternatives.

We also broadened our clean-fuel portfolio with the launch of our ethanol engine solution, followed by the first ethanol-specified shipbuilding contract signed at Marintec. These milestones sit alongside the successful installation of the first X52DF-A ammonia-fuelled engine, a project that has been years in development.

At Marintec China 2025, WinGD Ltd. CEO Dominik Schneiter spoke with TradeWinds about a breakthrough year for the company and the rapid progress being made towards cleaner propulsion.
Dominik outlined several major milestones achieved in 2025: 🛠️ The launch of Global Service by WinGD, expanding lifecycle support for customers worldwide. 🌍 The introduction of the first large-bore methanol engine, including three successful diesel-to-methanol retrofits. ⚙️ The first of the ammonia engines now tested and delivered in Korea and China. 🌏 The launch of WinGD’s ethanol engine solution, with the first ethanol-specified shipbuilding contract signed at Marintec.
Announced jus this week, the launch of the X-DF High Pressure engine, driven by strong customer demand for higher power density and improved efficiency, particularly in the container segment.
On the delays to the IMO Net-Zero Framework adoption Dominik said, this has slowed some investment decisions, but is now providing the industry valuable time to mature safety concepts, operational procedures and crew training for future fuels.
Looking ahead, Dominik said WinGD enters 2026 with confidence - supported by a strong orderbook, new service contracts, expanding retrofit opportunities and a team ready to deliver at pace.
