🌉LNG looks set to bridge a wider gap
For years, LNG has been viewed as a transitional fuel - a bridge between conventional marine fuels and the zero or near-zero emissions fuels of the future.
But what if that bridge is longer than many expected?
While alternative fuels continue to attract investment and attention, regulatory uncertainty, fuel availability concerns and compliance economics are driving many shipowners towards pragmatic decisions today.
LNG dominated alternative-fuelled newbuild orders in 2025 (excluding LNG carriers), reflecting its maturity, established infrastructure and ability to support compliance while preserving future fuel flexibility.
In this article, Head of Business Development at WinGD Ltd., Andrea Lazzaro, explores why LNG continues to play a critical role in shipping's decarbonisation pathway, the economics behind current investment decisions, and how bio-LNG and synthetic methane could further extend LNG's long-term relevance.

💬 What role do you see LNG playing in the industry's journey to net zero?

⚡ X-DF-HP: High Power. High Impact.
Large vessels require propulsion systems designed for sustained high output.
For applications with high propulsion and onboard energy demand, engine performance must extend beyond efficiency alone.
WinGD’s X-DF-HP engines are engineered to meet these requirements:
🔹 High power density enabling compact installation
🔹 Low methane slip with strong overall efficiency
🔹 Integration with high-pressure gas supply and SCR systems
They are suited to vessels where power demand, space constraints, and emissions performance must be addressed simultaneously.
Within the WinGD LNG portfolio, the X-DF-HP complements low-pressure solutions across a broader range of applications.

🧏♂️ What we heard at Posidonia: from fuel choices to implementation challenges
A week on we reflect on what we heard at Posidonia. One of the strongest messages from Posidonia 2026 and the ship.energy Summit #SES26, where our CEO Dominik Schneiter joined industry leaders to discuss maritime decarbonisation, was that the conversation is evolving.
The focus is no longer just on which fuels will power shipping's future, but on how the industry scales solutions, manages compliance and supports vessels throughout their operational life.
Across the week, several themes stood out:
🔹 Growing interest in retrofit solutions
🔹 Increasing focus on service and lifecycle support
🔹 Continued momentum behind ammonia, methanol and ethanol
🔹 Greater attention on methane slip and FuelEU Maritime compliance
🔹 Recognition that technology is ready, but scaling deployment remains the next challenge
One message stood out above all: there is no single pathway to decarbonisation. Success will depend on combining the right technologies, fuels and support solutions to meet the needs of different vessel types and operations.
🙏 Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation in Athens.

💭 A thoughtful perspective from Abdul Quadir Abudu, P.Eng, PMP® on one of the most important challenges facing shipping today.
The reality is that the industry's decarbonisation pathway will be shaped not only by the vessels being ordered today, but by the thousands of ships already in operation.
At WinGD, we see retrofit solutions and conversion-ready engine platforms as key enablers of that transition. They allow operators to reduce emissions in the near term while maintaining the flexibility to adapt as fuel availability, regulation and technology continue to evolve.
The challenge is not choosing between acting today and preparing for tomorrow. It is about doing both: making practical decisions that deliver emissions reductions now while keeping future fuel pathways open.

🎉 🚢 A Landmark Moment for Ammonia-Fuelled Shipping
WinGD Ltd. has reached a major milestone in shipping's decarbonisation journey with the delivery of ANTWERPEN to Exmar, the world's first ocean-going vessel designed to operate on ammonia fuel.
Powered by WinGD's X52DF-A ammonia-fuelled engine, the vessel demonstrates that ammonia propulsion has now moved into commercial reality, opening a new chapter in the adoption of zero-carbon marine fuels.
Developed through close collaboration between WinGD Ltd., Exmar, HD Hyundai Engine Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, ANTWERPEN is the first of four ammonia dual-fuel midsize gas carriers that will help build confidence in ammonia as a practical fuel solution for deep-sea shipping.
Following successful factory testing, type approval and sea trials, the project demonstrates how collaboration across the maritime value chain can turn innovation into operational reality.
With 40 X-DF-A engines already on order across gas carriers, bulk carriers, tankers and container vessels, ammonia is poised to play an increasingly important role in the future marine fuel mix.
