In this WinGD Xpert episode, Leif Knipstrom, Senior Product Manager Diesel/Methanol explains the versatility of the X-DF-M/E engine platform.
From a dual-fuel setup, running on ethanol with diesel backup, to a tri-fuel configuration that allows operation on ethanol, methanol, or any blend of the two, the flexibility is built in.
This means operators can freely choose the most available or suitable fuel at any given time, without compromising performance.
🌱The result: greater fuel flexibility and operational efficiency, supporting the transition to low-carbon fuels.

Congratulations to Exmar on the delivery of ARLON, the second dual-fuel ammonia midsize gas carrier powered by a WinGD Ltd. X-DF-A engine.
Following the delivery of ANTWERPEN, ARLON represents another significant milestone for ammonia-fuelled shipping as the technology continues its transition from engine development to commercial operation.
Capable of carrying up to 46,000 m³ of ammonia or LPG, the vessel has been designed to operate on low-carbon ammonia fuel, supporting substantial greenhouse gas emissions reductions while transporting one of shipping's future fuels.
🎉 Congratulations to Exmar, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and all project partners on this achievement.

The next competitive advantage in marine propulsion may not be designed only in the engine factory. It may be built throughout the engine's entire operating life.

This latest development from WinGD Ltd. highlights a trend that I believe will become increasingly important over the coming decade.
Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) is certainly an efficiency technology, but its strategic significance goes further. Together with technologies such as iCER, digital optimisation and advanced engine controls, it reflects a broader transition from designing engines to continuously improving their operational performance.
That shift comes at an interesting moment.
Following the discussions at IMO MEPC 84, the industry is moving towards greater emphasis on measured performance, lifecycle emissions and onboard verification. For LNG propulsion in particular, reducing methane slip is becoming more than an environmental objective. It is becoming an increasingly important competitive differentiator as operators seek to demonstrate real-world performance rather than rely solely on certified values.
This is why retrofit strategies deserve attention.
A retrofit is not simply an upgrade. It extends the value of the installed base, enables compliance with evolving regulations, and creates new opportunities to improve efficiency throughout a vessel's lifecycle. Every engine already in service becomes a platform that can continue to evolve rather than a product whose value declines after delivery.
I believe this reflects a broader transformation taking place across industrial OEMs.
The companies that create the greatest long-term value may not simply build the most efficient engines. They will be those that combine engineering excellence with lifecycle knowledge, digital capability and continuous customer support.
The future competitive advantage may belong not only to the best engine, but to the best-managed installed base.
