WinGD grows Korea engine production capacity with first HD Hyundai Marine Engine license
WinGD has signed its first-ever license agreement with engine builder HD Hyundai Marine Engine (formerly STX Heavy Industries). The agreement will significantly extend WinGD’s capability to deliver its dual-fuel and diesel engine designs to bulk carrier and tanker newbuild projects in Korea and other markets using Korea-built two-stroke engines.
WinGD secures long-term service contracts covering 14 dual-fuel LNG carriers across three major shipowners
WinGD has recorded the first in-service operation of its X-DF-M/E alcohol fuel engine platform on ethanol fuel, following a successful bunkering and voyage in the US. The 9,000 TEU container ship Tangier Maersk, owned by the Maersk shipping line, successfully sailed from Houston to New York on ethanol fuel.

🤝 WinGD expands engine production capacity in Korea with first HD Hyundai Marine Engine licence agreement
WinGD Ltd. has signed its first-ever licence agreement with HD Hyundai Marine Engine, expanding the availability of our dual-fuel and diesel engine technologies for bulk carriers, tankers and other vessel segments.
The agreement gives shipowners and shipyards greater access to WinGD's mid-bore engine portfolio, including the X52 and X62 series and the latest X-S short-stroke designs.
Under the agreement, WinGD and HD Hyundai Marine Engine will share knowledge and experience to further reduce costs and improve vessel design integration of WinGD's mid-bore engines, while safeguarding their high reliability and in-service performance.

🚢 What are low-pressure and high-pressure dual-fuel LNG engines?
Dual-fuel LNG engines are designed around two different combustion concepts: the Diesel cycle and the Otto cycle. The key distinction lies in how LNG is introduced into the cylinder and how combustion is initiated.
🔹 Diesel Cycle (High-Pressure Injection) High-pressure dual-fuel engines follow the same combustion principle as conventional low-speed diesel engines. LNG is injected directly into the combustion chamber at very high pressure, alongside a small amount of pilot fuel. The pilot fuel ignites the gas, enabling robust combustion and high efficiency across a wide operating range.
🔹 Otto Cycle (Low-Pressure Admission) Low-pressure dual-fuel engines operate on a lean-burn Otto cycle. In this concept, LNG is admitted to the combustion chamber at low pressure before piston compression begins. Combustion is then initiated by a high-pressure injection of pilot fuel, resulting in lower combustion temperatures and reduced emissions.
⚙️ WinGD now offers both concepts within its LNG dual-fuel portfolio. By offering both low-pressure and high-pressure LNG solutions, WinGD provides ship operators with flexibility to select the engine concept that best aligns with their operational profile, fuel strategy, and emissions targets.

In a recent interview with Julian Buckley, International Editor at Power Progress, @WinGD’s Rene Baart discusses the role retrofits can play in helping shipowners navigate the energy transition.
With fuel availability, regulation and economics still evolving, René explains how retrofit-ready engines can give shipowners valuable flexibility, allowing them to adapt as the pathway becomes clearer.
🔧 Converting an engine to fuels such as methanol or ammonia requires changes to fuel injection, supply systems and key components – but with the right advance preparation, the engine retrofit itself can take as little as 12 days in a repair yard.
And the potential is significant. Of around 4,500 vessels operating with WinGD engines, approximately 2,300 are retrofit-ready to varying degrees.
